India's capital Rises to Dangerous Pollution Post Diwali
On Tuesday morning residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis were faced with exposed to extremely polluted air that was classified as the "critical" category.
Record-Breaking Air Quality Levels
Various sections of Delhi recorded an AQI above 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the recommended limit established by the global health authority.
Particular areas, concentrations of dangerous airborne particles soared to of eighteen hundred, amounting to fifteen to twenty times above acceptable standards.
Fireworks Restrictions and New Policy Shifts
Since 2020, officials had implemented a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during Diwali due to their major role to the hazardous haze that blankets the metropolis as colder weather approaches.
Nevertheless recently, the current local leadership appealed to the supreme court to request a modification of the restrictions.
They proposed allowing "green crackers" β historically criticized by environmentalists as being only about 30% lower impact β as a middle ground between "tradition and ecological concerns".
Judicial Ruling and Enforcement
To the disappointment of environmental and health activists, judges complied with the request, mandating that green firecrackers could be ignited during designated time windows throughout the celebrations.
During the celebrations, there was extensive violation of the designated hours across the metropolis, with little enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the supposedly greener version.
Many recording stations throughout Delhi registered contamination peaking around the night hours to extremely hazardous readings recorded during celebrations in at least recent memory.
Cross-Border Consequences
The proliferation of pyrotechnics during the celebrations also triggered a controversy with bordering Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistan's the Punjab region partially attributing deteriorating pollution levels in their urban centers on contaminants originating in India following the festivities.
Long-Standing Environmental Crisis
Extremely elevated readings of atmospheric toxins in the city have persisted as a serious challenge for over a decade and a half, with the situation gradually deteriorating.
During Diwali, the levels of hazardous particles in the environment has been observed to spike to 70% higher the peak readings ever documented in the Chinese city, which was previously viewed as the globally most contaminated urban center.
Various Contamination Sources
This crisis in the city is attributed to a mix of various sources including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, building projects, waste incineration and pollutants from farm burning in neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana.
Within these states, agricultural workers regularly ignite agricultural waste to expedite field preparation, generating dangerous haze that remains stagnant over the city as cooler air descends.
Health and Financial Toll
Public health and economic consequences on the approximately 33 million residents calling home the capital region is enormous, according to numerous studies.
This pollution leads to increased incidence of neurological, heart and circulatory and breathing diseases, and can even lead to oncological diseases.
Air quality crisis is calculated to be causing 10,000 premature mortalities per year in the capital.
